Mr C Sylge

A very warm welcome to Honley High School’s website. I hope that you will find the information in the site informative and helpful.

The things that have attracted me back to Honley are, I hope, the same things that will attract you as parents, learners and partners – a long standing tradition of academic excellence partnered with an inclusive approach to the needs of young people; a desire to put learners first, a committed and exceptional staff, and a friendly and purposeful student community.

Our academic success continues to speak for itself, but these crucial years of adolescence are about more than just passing examinations. The world into which our young people will emerge, after their thirteen years of compulsory education, is changing more rapidly than anyone of us can predict. And if our children are to be able to thrive in that world they will need to develop a set of personal skills and qualities in tandem with their academic qualifications. They will need a questioning mind, perseverance and resilience They will need to be able to adapt, be flexible and not be too set in their ways They will need imagination and creativity, self discipline and independence, compassion and a sense of our responsibilities towards other people. They will need to be able to learn on their own, without close supervision, and understand that learning is not something that begins at 9.00 in the morning and stops at 3.15 on weekdays, but that it is a lifelong journey that is started here with us in school.

I see it as our duty to help support our learners to develop these qualities as well as to help them achieve the exceptional examination results of which they are capable and which will be so critical to their future happiness and success. Although we are a large school, we like to feel we get to know all our learners personally, and seek to value and nurture what is unique and special about everyone. We are an inclusive school and treat each child as an individual, doing everything within our power to support each one of them to explore and fulfil their potential. Indeed, I see it as the hallmark of the school that we are ambitious for every child who joins us.

I look forward to welcoming you into our school in the near future. We seek excellence in everything we do and welcome your thoughts about how we can do things better.
